Job Description

Our client is a multinational manufacturer of scales and analytical instruments. It is the largest provider of weighing instruments for use in laboratory, industrial, and food retailing applications.

POSITION: Industrial Vehicle Scale Specialist - Sales

There are two distinct and equally important roles within this position. The first role of the Vehicle Scale Specialist (VSS) is as a sale professional. The primary responsibility of this role is to increase sales by identifying, pursuing and winning highly qualified opportunities. Much of this effort is concentrated around activities that are associated with providing guidance and assistance in the development of a detailed product specification and a comprehensive scope of work. To accomplish this the VSS will work closely and in collaboration with the customer and/ or their appointed engineer/architect or EPC firm (engineer-procure-construct). In this capacity, the VSS is essentially acting as a subject matter expert, or consultant, for all aspects of the vehicle weighing application.

The primary areas of knowledge and expertise required for effectiveness in performing these duties include:
  • Educating the customer on how a Vehicle Scale works and the value of the underlying technology and product quality that separates our client’ s Vehicle Scale from competitive brands
  • Assistance with site layout and planning for optimal location of scale, scale house and peripheral devices (scoreboards, unattended systems, automatic gates, traffic lights, integration to process controls etc…)
  • Utility and overall infrastructure requirements needed to support the entire system and to insure a functional and operational system
  • Knowing, understanding and communicating Federal and Local Weights & Measures (and servicing railroad for rail scale applications) regulations which relate not only to the weighing element but to all the various and unique installation and site requirements encountered
  • Guidance on number and types of scales required based on the length of the available staging area, the amount of expected vehicle weighments and the duration for each transaction
  • Working with the appointed engineer on the selection of the most appropriate foundation design based on site specific grades, elevations, soil bearing and available space requirements
  • Understand and be able to clearly articulate specifics on technical product details and needed civil work including scale layout drawings, scale electrical systems drawings, foundation drawings, soil bearing requirements and overall scope of work
  • Provide engineer of record site specific documentation and drawings for inclusion in the project contract documents
  • Review project drawings/documents and provide detailed scope of work to 3rd party sub-contractors and suppliers for costing and estimating purposes on civil work
  • Prepare a turnkey bid package that details all aspects of our client’ s scope of supply and work (scale hardware, POS transaction software, scale automation, foundation construction, utility infrastructure and, when a rail scale, rail contractor… etc…) along with associated submittals and drawings
  • Conduct customer presentation of the complete turn-key bid package, review of proposed solution, detailed scope of civil work, drawings and call-out of responsibilities to assure a thorough  understanding of everything that is, or is not, included our client’ s offer.

The second role of the VSS revolves around post-sale activities and project implementation responsibilities, which begin at order entry and continue all the way through to final commissioning and customer acceptance. Essentially the VSS takes on the additional role and responsibility of an " on-site" project superintendent by managing and inspecting work by our employees and /or sub-contractors to ensure that our completed scope of work is as promised. To further facilitate implementation and provide a deeper understanding of project scheduling timelines and coordination with other contractor' s and skilled trades, especially on the larger more complex jobs, participation in pre-construction and ongoing weekly progress meetings is essential. Finally, the VSS is responsible for developing and maintaining essential reporting that provides much needed transparency into the complexities and the timing of the project business.

The primary areas of knowledge and expertise required for effectiveness in performing these duties include:
  • Takes ownership and manages multiple projects simultaneously through a defined end to end process from planning through to implementation
  • Ensures that all of our client’ s employees and 3rd party sub-contractors who are working on or visiting the construction site are familiar with and comply with all required safety training, rules and regulations and that they have and use the appropriate personal protection equipment
  • Orchestrates, schedules and coordinates all involved client’ s (Internal) resources including Vehicle Scale Project Administrator, Finance, Legal, Product Management, ASG Software, Engineering, Production, Delivery and Service as well as (External) 3rd party Prime/General Contractors, EPC' s (Engineer-Procure-Construct), Sub-contractors, Distributors and Suppliers to satisfy end user specifications and requirements
  • Applies project management best practices to ensure project completion on time and on budget
  • Generates and manages project spreadsheets in a timely manner
  • Manages and tracks project deliverables using appropriate tools and provides direction and support to all stakeholders, both Internal and External
  • Recognizes and is actively involved in solving potential problems, drives meaningful escalations to the appropriate manager
  • Actively participates in internal project review meetings as necessary to ensure our client’ s deliverables are met and interests are secure
  • Addresses any company product or 3rd party contractor related escalations (long lead times, order and pricing issues, quality problems, project scheduling etc…)
  • Constantly monitors and reports the progress on projects to all stakeholders
  • Implements, manages and seeks approval for project change orders by applying sound justification principles
  • Defines/handoffs/manages project requirements to civil, mechanical, electrical, software and integration technician for successful execution
  • Accurately tracks and records time spent on projects

  • Highly competitive base salary plus commission, company vehicle, laptop, cell phone, benefits program includes medical, dental and vision care coverage and a 401(k) savings plan – all eligible upon date of hire. Paid time off, flexible spending accounts, short-and long-term disability coverage, basic life insurance (with the opportunity to purchase additional life insurance coverage), business travel insurance, Employee Assistance Program, Healthy Lifestyles Programs, and  Domestic Partner benefits.  Excellent growth opportunities!
